French authorities have arrested nearly 900 people following widespread violence that erupted across the country after Paris Saint-Germain secured a second consecutive UEFA Champions League title.

The celebrations, which began after PSG’s historic triumph, quickly degenerated into clashes between youths and security forces in Paris and several other cities, leaving scores injured and causing extensive property damage.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said more than 890 arrests were recorded nationwide, representing a significant increase compared to similar incidents last year.

According to the Minister, almost 180 law enforcement officers sustained injuries during efforts to restore order.

Authorities reported incidents of arson, vandalism and looting, with vehicles set ablaze and commercial establishments targeted by rioters.

The violence cast a shadow over what would otherwise have been a moment of national sporting celebration.

President Emmanuel Macron, who hosted the PSG squad at the Élysée Palace on Sunday evening, praised the club’s achievement but strongly condemned the unrest.

Describing the violence as unacceptable, Macron said those responsible had betrayed the spirit of sport and football.

French authorities also confirmed several casualties linked to the celebrations, including the death of a motorcyclist who reportedly lost his life while celebrating PSG’s victory around the Paris ring road.

Investigations are continuing into several reported assaults and stabbings that occurred during the disturbances.

Security agencies have vowed to identify and prosecute those responsible for the violence as the country assesses the damage caused by one of the most turbulent nights of football celebrations in recent memory.
