France delivered a statement performance on Friday night, thrashing Norway 4-1 as Ousmane Dembélé produced a devastating first-half hat-trick to send Les Bleus into the World Cup knockout stage as Group I winners.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward scored in the 7th, 20th and 32nd minutes, becoming the first player to register a first-half World Cup hat-trick since Russia's Oleg Salenko scored three before the break against Cameroon in 1994.

France had already secured qualification for the Round of 32 before kick-off, but Didier Deschamps' side showed no signs of easing off against a Norway team that made 10 changes to its starting lineup, including leaving Erling Haaland on the bench.
France nearly scored after just 21 seconds when Kylian Mbappé burst down the right and rattled the crossbar with a fierce drive.
The breakthrough came six minutes later. Mbappé slipped a pass into Dembélé, who drove a right-footed shot across goalkeeper Egil Selvik to make it 1-0.
Dembélé doubled the lead in the 20th minute, drifting between three defenders before curling a left-footed effort beyond Selvik. Norway briefly responded when Thelo Aasgaard scored only 14 seconds after the restart to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. In the 32nd minute, Dembélé completed his hat-trick, restoring France's two-goal cushion and sending the French supporters inside Gillette Stadium into celebration.
Norway had a golden opportunity to make it 3-2 early in the second half when Theo Hernández fouled Oscar Bobb in the penalty area. Jørgen Strand Larsen stepped up, but France goalkeeper Mike Maignan produced a superb save low to his right.
That proved to be Norway's last realistic route back into the contest.
Désiré Doué added a fourth goal deep into stoppage time to complete a comprehensive victory for the 2018 world champions.

Norway manager Ståle Solbakken defended his decision to rest Haaland, Martin Ødegaard and several other regular starters, saying fatigue concerns and the team's already-secured qualification influenced the move.
But the wholesale changes left Norway exposed against a France side packed with attacking quality. Mbappé finished with an assist, while Dembélé took his tally to four goals at the tournament and strengthened his case in the Golden Boot race.
