Five Hunters Killed as Security Forces Neutralise Over 40 Bandits in Katsina

At least five members of a hunters' team have been killed while more than 40 bandits were reportedly neutralised during a fierce gun battle in Guga village, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government said the security operation, which took place on Sunday, followed an attack by more than 200 heavily armed bandits who allegedly invaded the community in what authorities described as a reprisal assault.

According to the government, the attackers were led by the notorious bandit kingpin, Idi Abasu Aiki, and supported by members of the Ado Aleru criminal group operating from neighbouring Zamfara State.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 5:40 p.m on Sunday.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu'azu, the state government said the attackers intended to dislodge local hunters and members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps operating in the area before launching further attacks on Bakori town and surrounding communities.

The government said intelligence gathering and surveillance had enabled security operatives to anticipate the attack and deploy a coordinated response.

The resulting confrontation, according to the statement, forced the attackers to retreat after suffering what the government described as heavy casualties.

"Consequently, more than 40 bandits were neutralised during the operation, while follow-up intelligence confirmed that about eight senior commanders of the criminal group were also eliminated," the statement said.

The government further claimed that the notorious bandit leader, Idi Abasu Aiki, sustained life-threatening gunshot injuries during the encounter.

However, the claims of casualties among the bandits and the reported condition of the alleged kingpin could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.

The Katsina Government said the latest confrontation was linked to an earlier security operation conducted on July 7, 2026, at Dawan Laila village, also in Bakori Local Government Area, where the same criminal network reportedly suffered significant losses.

According to the government, Sunday's attack was an attempt by the bandits to regain lost ground and weaken the community-based security structure established to protect vulnerable communities in the area.

The statement said security operatives had subsequently commenced clearance operations across the affected areas to recover weapons and other items allegedly abandoned by fleeing members of the criminal group.

It added that surveillance and monitoring had also been intensified to prevent further attacks and forestall attempts by the bandits to regroup.

Despite the reported success against the attackers, the operation came at a heavy cost, with five members of the hunters' team losing their lives.

The state government said the hunters were fatally shot after they were caught outside the frontline while attending to personal shopping activities during the operation.

It described the deceased as "courageous patriots" who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of their communities.

The government expressed condolences over the deaths and commended the hunters, members of the Community Watch Corps and other security personnel involved in repelling the attack.

"These courageous patriots paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our communities," the statement said.

The government also said normalcy had been restored in Guga and other affected communities, while reaffirming its commitment to sustained collaboration among security agencies and community-based security groups.

The latest incident underscores the continuing security challenges confronting parts of Katsina State, where armed criminal groups have repeatedly targeted rural communities and exposed residents to killings, abductions and displacement.

The state's reliance on local hunters and community-based security formations also highlights the growing role of community-led intelligence and rapid-response structures in the fight against banditry in parts of northern Nigeria.

The Katsina Government said it would continue to support joint security operations aimed at protecting residents and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
