The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has commenced a comprehensive enforcement operation targeting vehicles operating with illegal tinted windows, concealed number plates and improper registration documentation.
The initiative, according to the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, is part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety and curb criminal activities across Abuja and surrounding communities.
Addressing journalists on Friday, Sanusi explained that intelligence reports had consistently linked such vehicles to criminal operations, particularly kidnapping, robbery and the notorious “one-chance” syndicates operating within the territory. According to him, the use of heavily tinted vehicles and concealed registration plates enables criminal elements to hide their identities and evade law enforcement detection.
He noted that these tactics have increasingly complicated investigations and posed significant security challenges for authorities.
“The operation is not designed to inconvenience law-abiding citizens who have legitimately obtained approvals for tinted vehicles,” Sanusi said.
“Rather, it is intended to deny criminal elements the cover they exploit to perpetrate crimes against innocent residents.”
The commissioner disclosed that more than 30 vehicles had already been impounded since the commencement of the operation. The affected vehicles were allegedly found to be operating with illegal tinted glass, concealed registration plates or without valid vehicle registration documents.
Sanusi warned that owners and operators of such vehicles would face prosecution under relevant federal laws and provisions of the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies aimed at safeguarding lives and property throughout the Federal Capital Territory.
The commissioner also appealed to residents for cooperation and understanding, stressing that public support remains critical to the success of ongoing security operations.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious vehicles, individuals and activities through designated emergency channels or the nearest police formation. According to him, strengthening community-police collaboration remains one of the most effective tools for combating crime and ensuring a safer capital city.
