The Edo State Police Command has announced the arrest of 77 suspected criminals and the rescue of 38 kidnapped victims during intelligence-led security operations carried out across the state in June 2026.

Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika disclosed the figures on Friday during the command's monthly media briefing, describing the operations as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety, combat violent crime and enhance accountability in policing.

According to the police commissioner, the suspects include 32 alleged kidnappers, 15 suspected cultists, three suspected armed robbers, 11 murder suspects, two suspects arrested for unlawful possession of firearms, and 14 suspects linked to rape and other sexual and gender-based violence, including defilement.

Agbonika said the command intensified intelligence-driven operations throughout the month, targeting kidnapping syndicates, cult groups, armed robbers and other violent criminals while strengthening collaboration with other security agencies and community-based security outfits.

He noted that the sustained operations have significantly disrupted criminal activities across the state, stressing that there would be no safe haven for criminals in Edo.

The commissioner attributed the successes recorded by the command to the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as well as the professionalism and dedication of officers and men of the Edo State Police Command.

He also acknowledged the support of other security agencies and residents, whose cooperation and timely intelligence, he said, have continued to aid security operations.

Agbonika disclosed that 38 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued through coordinated tactical operations conducted in different parts of the state.

According to him, the achievements reflect the command's determination to rid Edo of criminal elements through proactive policing and intelligence gathering.

He appealed to residents to sustain their collaboration with the police by providing credible information that would help prevent crime and apprehend offenders.

"Security is a shared responsibility, and your collaboration continues to make the difference," the commissioner said.

Agbonika further commended the Edo State Government, sister security agencies, local vigilante groups, hunters and community safety volunteers for their continued support and cooperation in the fight against crime across the state.
