Ebonyi Police Detain Officers Over Alleged Brutalisation of Man, Launch Probe

The Ebonyi State Police Command has detained officers allegedly involved in the assault and brutalisation of a civilian in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state, assuring residents that a thorough investigation will be conducted.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the officers were moved to the Command Headquarters following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor.

According to Ukandu, the Commissioner ordered the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to immediately commence a detailed investigation into the incident.

“The officers have since been detained and will be subjected to the appropriate disciplinary procedures in accordance with the outcome of the investigation,” he said.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the victim sustained serious injuries during the alleged assault and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

The Command expressed sympathy to the victim and assured the public that the investigation would be handled transparently and without bias.

Ukandu reiterated that the Ebonyi Police Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens fundamental rights.

He stressed that the Command maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards police brutality and other forms of misconduct capable of damaging public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.

The police said any officer found culpable after the investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with established regulations.
