The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in captivity after being abducted by bandits.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria described the late officer as a distinguished soldier whose service to the nation left an enduring impact on the military and national security architecture.
“The Defence Headquarters regrets to announce the passing of Major General Rabe Abubakar (Retired), who tragically lost his life in captivity following his abduction,” the statement said.
The military extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, former colleagues and Nigerians mourning his death.
Major General Abubakar was widely known within military circles for his service as Director of Defence Information and as spokesperson for several military formations during his distinguished career.
According to the Armed Forces, he played a significant role in counter-insurgency operations and contributed immensely to military professionalism and strategic communications.
“Maj Gen Abubakar served the nation with distinction and held many appointments, including spokesperson of various military formations as well as spokesman for the Armed Forces of Nigeria as Director Defence Information,” the statement added.
The DHQ disclosed that it deliberately refrained from making public comments regarding his abduction while rescue efforts were ongoing.
According to the military, all available operational resources were deployed in an attempt to secure his safe release.
The Armed Forces said the tragic loss would further strengthen its determination to combat terrorism, kidnapping and other criminal activities threatening national security.
“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens,” the statement said.
The military further revealed that operations across various theatres have been intensified in response to recent abductions and terrorist attacks nationwide.
It assured Nigerians that efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and bring perpetrators to justice would continue without relent.
“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the statement added.
The death of the retired general has drawn widespread reactions from security stakeholders and public officials, who have described his passing as a painful loss to the military institution and the nation.
