Court Sentences Two Men to Death for Rape, Murder of 17-Year-Old Girl

An Anambra State High Court sitting in the Ogidi Judicial Division has delivered a definitive judgment, sentencing two men to death by hanging for the conspiracy, rape and subsequent murder of a vulnerable 17-year-old girl, Jennifer Anene.

Presiding Judge, Justice U. I. Ndigwe, delivered the final ruling on Friday, holding that the state prosecution team successfully proved the three-count charges brought against the defendants beyond any reasonable doubt. Justice Ndigwe strongly condemned the actions of the convicts, describing their behavior as a horrific violation of human dignity that demanded absolute judicial accountability, noting that such crimes fundamentally desecrate the moral fabric of society.

The convicts, identified as Elochukwu Belonwu (the first defendant) and Chukwuebuka Ofokwu (the second defendant), are now bound for the gallows following a dark judicial saga that began nearly six years ago. A third accomplice, identified by local sources only as "Akpuchukwu," remains completely at large, with tracking active to locate him.

Leading the state's case, Principal State Counsel Mrs. Florence Abadom-Igweike painstakingly detailed the grim chronology of events to the court. The victim, Jennifer Anene, who was living with a mental impairment was officially reported missing on November 25, 2020, by her distraught grandfather, Elder Pius Anene.

The breakthrough in the investigation arrived three days later through an unexpected source: the first defendant’s own wife.

Horrified by what she had seen, the wife informed the victim's family that she had personally witnessed her husband, Elochukwu, along with Ofokwu and Akpuchukwu, violently assaulting the teenager while the girl screamed desperately for help. When initially confronted by the family and local community members, Belonwu fiercely denied the allegations, shifting blame by claiming he had last seen Jennifer in the company of the second defendant.

The situation turned fatal shortly after when Akpuchukwu abruptly brought the completely unconscious teenager back to her family home, dropped her off, and fled the scene before he could be detained by neighbors. Acting swiftly on direct instructions from the Nigeria Police Force, Jennifer’s family rushed her to a nearby hospital, but medical practitioners confirmed she was dead on arrival.

A comprehensive postmortem examination proved to be the ultimate anchor for the state's case. The forensic report revealed extensive physical bruises, severe vaginal tearing and unmistakable signs of aggravated, repetitive sexual assault that directly led to her systemic collapse.

During the trial, the prosecution built its case around two vital testimonies: the victim's grandfather, Elder Pius Anene and the primary Investigating Police Officer (IPO). The state formally entered the definitive postmortem report, the official police investigation findings, and graphic photographic crime scene evidence into the judicial record.

The trial faced a significant hurdle when the key eyewitness, the first defendant’s wife flatly declined to testify in open court despite being formally served with a mandatory court summons. Legally shielded by her refusal, the defense thought the case would crumble. Taking the stand in their own defense, both Belonwu and Ofokwu entered total denials of the crimes, claiming complete innocence.

However, Justice Ndigwe ruled that the combined weight of the forensic data, the circumstantial timeline and the initial verified disclosures completely smashed the defendants alibis. The court affirmed that the state had established an unbroken chain of guilt, culminating in the maximum capital sentence
