Army@163: COAS Charges Troops to Stay Resolute as Nigerian Army Marks Anniversary

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on officers, soldiers, civilian staff, veterans and their families to remain steadfast in their commitment to defending Nigeria, as the Nigerian Army marked its 163rd anniversary.

Shaibu made the appeal on Friday in a goodwill message delivered during the Juma'at prayers held as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).

He described the anniversary as a moment for reflection, thanksgiving and renewed dedication to national service, noting that it provides an opportunity to celebrate the Army's achievements, honour fallen heroes and reaffirm its constitutional responsibility to safeguard the country.

According to the Army chief, the Nigerian Army has, for 163 years, remained a symbol of patriotism, resilience, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation.

He said the force has continued to adapt to evolving security threats while remaining focused on protecting Nigeria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Speaking on the theme of this year's celebration, "Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army," Shaibu said it reflects the institution's enduring commitment to the security, prosperity and trust of Nigerians.

"Our troops remain actively engaged in operations aimed at combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other criminal activities threatening the peace and stability of our nation," he said.

"In spite of the complexity of these security challenges, the Nigerian Army has continued to record notable achievements across the various theatres of operation."

The COAS commended officers and soldiers for their loyalty, discipline, courage and professionalism, stating that their efforts have resulted in the neutralisation of criminal elements, dismantling of terrorist enclaves, rescue of kidnapped victims and restoration of peace in several communities across the country.

Shaibu also reaffirmed his command philosophy, which he said is focused on transforming the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of operating effectively within joint and multi-agency security operations.

He noted that the Army's "Soldier-First" philosophy remains central to that vision, with increased emphasis on personnel welfare through improved accommodation, healthcare, training opportunities and educational support.

According to him, the Federal Government's approval for increased military recruitment will further enhance the Army's operational strength and its capacity to confront emerging security threats.

The Army chief paid tribute to personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices would never be forgotten.

He also acknowledged the contributions of wounded personnel and veterans, while appreciating the families of serving soldiers for their patience, sacrifices and unwavering support, describing them as an indispensable pillar of the Army's operational success.

Shaibu further expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support toward improving the operational capabilities and welfare of the Armed Forces.

He urged Nigerians to continue praying for the country, its leaders and security personnel, while encouraging Army personnel to uphold the institution's core values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service and professionalism.

"May Almighty God continue to bless and protect the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Federal Republic of Nigeria," he said.
