Defending champions Argentina produced one of the most remarkable comebacks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overturning a two-goal deficit in the closing stages to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book a place in the quarter-finals.
Trailing 2-0 with just 11 minutes remaining at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, Lionel Scaloni's side looked destined for a shock exit before late goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez transformed the contest and kept Argentina's title defence alive.
The dramatic victory came despite Messi missing a first-half penalty and Egypt delivering one of their finest performances at a World Cup.

The Pharaohs stunned the three-time world champions in the 15th minute when defender Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to head home Marwan Attia's cross and give his side a deserved lead.
Argentina had an immediate opportunity to level the score five minutes later after Nicolas Tagliafico was brought down inside the penalty area by Haissem Hassan.
However, Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubeir produced a brilliant save to deny Messi from the spot, continuing his outstanding tournament after also saving a penalty during the group stage.
Shoubeir frustrated Argentina throughout the opening half with further impressive stops to keep out Alexis Mac Allister's header and Julian Alvarez's close-range effort as Egypt went into the break with their lead intact.
Egypt thought they had doubled their advantage shortly before the hour mark when Mostafa Ziko found the net after a swift counterattack, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul earlier in the build-up.
The setback did little to slow Hossam Hassan's side.

In the 67th minute, Hassan again caused problems down the right flank before delivering a dangerous ball into the box for Ziko, who calmly finished to put Egypt 2-0 ahead and within touching distance of one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Argentina, who had struggled to create clear-cut chances for much of the contest, finally found a breakthrough in the 79th minute.
Romero powered home a header from Messi's delivery to reduce the deficit and spark renewed belief among the defending champions.
Five minutes later, Messi atoned for his earlier penalty miss by firing a first-time finish into the roof of the net after Egypt failed to clear their lines, bringing Argentina level at 2-2 and setting up a frantic finish.
With extra time looming, Argentina struck the decisive blow in the second minute of stoppage time.

Lautaro Martinez delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area, where Enzo Fernandez guided a perfectly placed header beyond Shoubeir to complete an extraordinary turnaround.
Fernandez's winner was also significant as it became the 3,000th goal in FIFA World Cup history.
The dramatic finish came moments after Egypt appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty following an incident involving Mohamed Salah inside Argentina's penalty area. Referee François Letexier waved away the appeals, allowing Argentina to launch the counterattack that ended with Fernandez's winning goal.

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Egypt earned widespread praise for a disciplined and fearless display that pushed the reigning champions to the limit.
Shoubeir was outstanding between the posts, while Ibrahim, Ziko, Hassan and Salah all played key roles in a performance that came agonisingly close to producing one of the greatest World Cup shocks.
For Argentina, it was another reminder of their resilience under Scaloni. Just as they survived a stern test in the previous round, the holders again found a way to prevail when elimination appeared inevitable.
Messi, who finished with the tournament's Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award, once again proved decisive when it mattered most, recovering from his penalty miss to score the crucial equaliser that reignited Argentina's hopes.

The victory sends Argentina into the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland as they continue their pursuit of a fourth FIFA World Cup title.
